the illusion of safety

In our current times, there is a movement towards protecting ourselves from everything. Airport security, foreign policy, subtle and not-so-subtle racism, etc. One of the arenas in which this is in danger of becoming crippling is in the care of our children. It seems that, in an effort to protect them from things that make US afraid (note- not THEM...keep in mind whose fears we're dealing with here, regardless of their basis in fact), we are insulating them from life itself. This has bothered me about most parenting for some time now. I don't have kids, which for some of you will allow for the easy negation of my opinion. However, this woman is one of my new heroes. I'll let her speak for me.

Let people, children included, live. Even if it kills them.
